What is STD testing?

STD testing diagnoses diseases transmitted through oral, anal, or vaginal intercourse. Specifically, it analyzes your blood, urine, or saliva for the presence of viruses, bacteria, or parasites.

If you’re sexually active with more than one partner, you should be routinely tested for STDs. Many sexually transmitted infections don’t cause noticeable symptoms. Routine checkups can alert you to problems early on when they respond best to treatment.

Who should undergo STD testing?

Dr. Kazi recommends you undergo STD testing if you’re:

  • Entering into a new relationship
  • Thinking about having sex without condoms
  • Having sex with more than one person
  • Experiencing symptoms that indicate an infection

You should also undergo STD testing if you find out that your partner has had sex with someone other than you.

What conditions does STD testing screen for?

At Palm Desert Urgent Care, Dr. Kazi uses STD testing to screen for various sexually transmitted infections, including:

  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • HIV
  • Hepatitis B
  • Syphilis
  • Trichomoniasis
  • Genital warts

Dr. Kazi also offers STD testing for herpes.

How is STD testing performed?

Dr. Kazi offers several STD tests, including:

Blood and urine tests

Blood and urine tests analyze a sample of your blood or urine for the presence of viruses or bacteria. If you receive a positive result, Dr. Kazi makes treatment recommendations.

Swabs

During a swab test, Dr. Kazi uses a cotton swab to collect a sample from the vagina, cervix, or urethra. He sends the sample to a lab where it’s analyzed for the presence of viruses, bacteria, and parasites.

Physical exams

Some STDs, like genital warts, are visible to the eye. If Dr. Kazi sees sores, redness, and other signs of infection, he collects samples for testing.

When will I get the results of my STD test?

The time it takes to receive the results of an STD test depends on which test you underwent. It takes about five minutes for Dr. Kazi to collect a sample of your blood, urine, or saliva, but it typically takes 48 hours –– and sometimes as long as a week–– to get your results back from the lab.*
